How can I fill small Holes in a wooden wall?

hardware and home stores sell a product called wood putty, or wood filler. It comes in shades of wood finishes and is the texture of peanut butter. you simply plug the holes with that and sand it smooth when it dries completly. Shouldn't cost you more than $3 or so.
